Dear compatriots,
The Central Council of EDON, addresses its warmest greetings to the Cypriot Youth, GreekCypriots and TurkishCypriots. We welcome the holding of tonight’s event named “Independent Cyprus” co-organized by the BKP Youth, TDP Youth, Baraka and the Independent Road.
Today’s event, takes place in a period of negotiations among the leaders of both communities, towards the solution of the Cyprus problem. As EDON, we consistently support the negotiation process, conducted towards a solution of a Bizonal-Bicommunal Federation, with political equality of the two communities, as defined in the UN resolutions, with one sovereignty, one citizenship and one international personality.
The presence of Mustafa Akkinci in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, is a positive development and we hope that our expectations will be verified during the negotiation process. We strongly believe that for the talks to result positively, both leaders must take advantage of the convergences achieved by the two previous leaders, Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat. The convergences are a result of a sincere effort by Christofias and Talat, to push things towards a solution and by those some of the most important aspects of the problem are resolved. As EDON, we have called upon the current leaders of the two communities, Mr. Anastasiades and Mr. Akkinci, to take hold of these convergences and continue the negotiations in a constructive spirit having in mind the rights of the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
Meanwhile, as EDON, we consider as a requirement for the solution of the Cyprus problem, the discharge of our country from all foreign armies, foreign patrons and by the perception that Cyprus needs motherlands. Indeed, this is the lesson coming learnt from the painful recent history of Cyprus. Other than that, Cypriots have suffered enough because of the interventions of imperialism. We believe that the best guarantors of the solution of the Cyprus problem, are none others than Cypriots themselves, especially the young generation.
Cyprus, which is today one of most militarized places in the whole world, can become an island of peace and prosperity. If money is invested in social prosperity, education, research, culture, health and quality of life instead of military equipment the island’s prospects can be of great importance. Here we are, the young people showing the way for the future of peace and social progress. Let us fight for it!
