The 19th Pancyprian EDON Conference, held from 4 to 6 January 2019 in Nicosia, following a discussion on International Reality, resulted in the following:
A. Our Conference takes place in a context of an internationally generalized capitalist crisis, the results of which are still obvious to the people of the world. It is a structural crisis of capitalism, a crisis that has its roots in the basic opposition of capitalism, which wants production to be of a social nature, but the result of production to end up in the hands of a few.
B. Workers and youth are confronted with the consequences of the capitalist crisis, especially in the developed capitalism countries. Unemployment has become a permanent and harsh burden for millions of workers, especially young people. Labour rights are being wiped out, cheap and flexible work is institutionalized, salaries are being slashed, and the right to strike and organized struggle is being questioned.
C. Neoliberal policies have contributed and still contribute to the deterioration of the current situation. Everything is being privatized, labour relations are being deregulated for the benefit of large capital, while what has been left of the so-called social state is disintegrating. Education and health are marketed, and rights have been turned into the privilege of the few, while class barriers arise all areas of social life.
D. The EU is increasingly associated with NATO's objectives (see newly created PESCO) by spending billions from the EU budget and Member States on armament programmes and military missions. At the same time, NATO is strengthening its presence and influence even more on European soil. The attitude and participation of the EU in imperialist wars creates enormous refugee and migratory waves that lead to the death of thousands of fellow humans.
E. In Eastern Europe, NATO continues to expand and strengthen its Baltic-centered military presence and the increased involvement of NATO-oriented businesses in the NATO budget. Implementing the plan for the creation of a NATO force in the region.
F. Neo-Nazi and neo-fascist organizations are developing, especially in Europe, and in some countries, they gain strong parliamentary representation and/or participate in governments capitalizing on xenophobia and racism. These forces are bred from the system and act for the interests of large capital, which utilizes them for the terrorisation of the masses.
G. Within the ideological imperative of the imperialist "New Order", the cultivation of anti-communism is also included as a form of combating communist, radical and wider progressive forces. Anti-communism is institutionalized and crowned the unscientific theory of the two extremes, it is attempted to equalize fascism with communism, and there are efforts to enforce counterfeiting and revision of modern world history. At the same time, communist, progressive and anti-fascist parties, organizations and movements are criminalized and persecuted.
Η. The overall thrust of international political reality leads to more militarization, more violent and warfare outbreaks, in the resurgence of new warfare-centres with the US, NATO and the EU maintaining their hegemony in the imperialist "New Order". International law is being circumvented and the "law" of the powerful is imposed at all costs.
I. The capitalist crisis has led to a deepening of antagonisms for the division of influence zones and control of energy pathways across the world, between imperialist centres and the new global and regional imperialist powers. The wider region of the south-eastern Mediterranean gathers the greatest interest because of the concentration of large energy deposits.
J. In the Middle East, an ongoing massacre occurs on a daily basis. In Afghanistan, the US has secured the establishment of its military presence. Libya and Yemen are still in a state of chaos due to the religious and sectarian clashes that are constantly being fought by their US allies. Iraq, after years of American occupation, is de facto truncated, while in neighbouring Lebanon the instability and the ongoing Israeli challenges continue to prevail. The people of Syria has faced for years the foreign interventions and civilian armed conflicts.
K. The prolonged pending of the Palestinian problem continues, and the people of Palestine continue to experience the suffering of the occupation and the violation of its democratic and human rights. Israeli aggression is sharply increasing, especially since the US move to transfer their embassy to Jerusalem.
L. In Latin America, the strengthening of far-right and neo-fascist powers, the war of despair and the coup d’états at the expense of progressive governments are intensifying. These efforts are but another expression of the escalating aggression of the local reactive and fascist forces being supported, as usual, by the US and their allies.
M. Interventions in North Africa continue to intensify the exploitation, impoverishment and crowding-out on a continent suffering from racial, religious and ethnic conflicts and a flagrant violation of human rights. At the same time, the US presence in Southeast Asia and the Pacific and the encircling plans of Russia and China respectively reveal the intentions of the imperialist centres.
Taking into consideration the above situation, the 19th Pancyprian Conference of EDON:
1. Opposes imperialism, the "New Order of Things", and draws upon all the progressive, democratic, peaceful forces around the world that demand the end of every imperialist warfare. Puts forward even more prominently the position for the dissolution of NATO and its branches.
2. Follows the path of organized struggle and the forging of a resistance front against any reactive, obscurantism, fascist and fundamentalist power. Supports the struggle of the peoples of the world and the youth that struggles for the prevailing of lasting peace against war, occupation and fascism.
3. Condemns the imperialist attacks against the Syrian People. Expresses its solidarity with the Syrian people, who alone can choose and build their future away from imperialist wars and interventions.
4. Expresses its full solidarity with the struggling Palestinian people against the Israeli occupation and demands the vindication of the Palestinian struggle with an independent Palestinian state at the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital and with the implementation of UN resolutions.
5. Condemns the criminal economic embargo imposed by the US in Cuba and Venezuela and any attempt of intervention in the countries of Latin America. Reaffirms the solidarity and support for the people of Cuba who, despite the difficulties, resist imperialism by preserving and promoting the ideals of peace and socialism.
6. Reaffirms the support for each people's struggle for liberation, self-determination, independence and sovereignty, away from occupying troops and imperialist bases.
7. Condemns the neo-liberal policies of the EU and other international imperialist organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Condemns any circumvention of popular and labour rights and continues to be on the side of the struggling peoples of Europe who resist.
8. Condemns the anti-communist campaign of the EU and other states that seek to counterfeit history, in the equation of communism with Hitlerism/fascism in banning communist symbols, parties and youths. These attacks are an attack against any democratic and a progressive youth, an attempt to silence and curb every voice that resists its anti-popular plans. EDON expresses its solidarity with its sister organizations that are persecuted and states that such actions cannot bend the Left.
9. Expresses its readiness to counter the rise of fascism, nationalism-chauvinism, intolerance and all expressions of racism and racial, social and other discriminations.
10. Expresses its sympathy to the world's immigrants who are the victims of capitalist exploitation. Declares present in the struggle for the social integration of refugees and immigrants into new societies.
11. Expresses its determination to continue the struggle to overthrow imperialism and reaffirms that the future of this world cannot be capitalism. EDON will be at the side of the youth, workers and peoples of the world. With certainty expresses its commitment to the only way forward for human, the path of solidarity, equality, peace, the world of socialism.
