The 18th of December has been declared by the UN as the International Day of Migrants. Unfortunately, during the last period the news almost on a daily basis are focused on the issue of migrants, while in front of us we see a black page for the humanity and a true humanitarian crisis with unlimited dimensions.
Hundreds of thousands of migrants are seeking for a safe haven mainly in the countries of Europe, Middle East and Africa. The term immigrant in the current climate is almost synonymous with the term refugee, since in the most cases migration is a result of the war situation, especially for the migrants coming from the areas of the Middle East and North Africa. However, the number of migrants leaving their countries in search of better working conditions and thus better living conditions for themselves and their family is not a small number.
For the Cypriots the phenomenon of migration is not an unknown phenomenon. Thousands of Cypriots have been found in all the corners of the world in the 50s, 60s and 70s, trying to build a better future for themselves and their families. We observe today the same thing, where many of our young people, and not only migrate in order to secure work, since Cyprus is plagued by unemployment.
At the same time, the Cyprus is a reception area of immigrants, as it is a destination for those in search of a better and more secure future. It is our belief that with a proper management and development of the necessary policies, that migration can contribute positively to social and economic development of the hosting countries, and in the case of Cyprus as well.
This day is an opportunity to highlight the contribution of migrants to the social, economic and cultural development. The Central Council of EDON would like to send a greeting message to the immigrants living and working in Cyprus. We would like to assure them that the CC of EDON is found on their side, as an ally in the common struggle of the Cypriot and foreign workers against exploitation and racism. In parallel, we assure them that our effort to combat racism and xenophobia and for the fight to educate young people with the ideals of solidarity, humanism and internationalism is found in the front line.
As an organization we believe, that the Cypriots and foreign workers do not have to divide anything between them. They are both victims of the exploitation of the local and the multinational capital and only through a joint action and common struggles we can confront these issues and improve the working conditions.
We call on the Cyprus government to develop a comprehensive immigration policy emphasizing on humans. It is tragedy that the Mediterranean has become a vast graveyard of the people. Is a debt of the EU to develop a comprehensive immigration policy that will face the whole issue in a spirit of solidarity. Though, we call for a commitment for common struggles, to build a tolerant society, based on solidarity, and struggle to defend the acquired rights all the workers.
Within the framework of International Day of Migrants, there is a common action operating by the member organizations of the region of Europe and North America of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, through which we express our solidarity towards the immigrants and the struggles of the peoples for peace, security, justice and independence .
