Statement for the re-election of EDON to the Presidency of WFDY
Upon the completion of the 19th Assembly of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) which took place on the 9th until the 12th of November in Havana in Cuba, EDON was unanimously re-elected to the Presidency of WFDY with co. Nicolas Papademetriou, member of the C.C. of EDON.
Before dozens of delegates from around the world who participated in the 19th Assembly of WFDY, EDON reaffirmed the positive assessment the rest of member-organizations of WFDY have for its presence and rich action and contribution to WFDY, and generally to the struggles of the world youth anti-imperialistic movement.
The newly elected General Council of WFDY, has entrusted EDON with the presidency of the Federation for further four years. The re-election of EDON if of great honour for EDON and Cyprus in general, since WFDY has always been on the side of the Cypriot people in their struggles for liberation and reunification. Of course this development weighs our Organization with a lot of responsibilities, especially during a time when the need for cooperation, coordination and reinforcement of the struggle of all anti-imperialist, progressive and democratic forces emerges as an imperative need in the face of challenges posed by the escalation of the aggressiveness of imperialism.
During the election for the WFDY headquarters, the Communist Youth of Cuba (UJC) was elected for the seat of Secretary and for the seats of Vice-presidents the Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth (ULDY) and the Socialist Youth Union of Sri Lanka (SYU Sri Lana) were elected. The seat of Vice-president from the region of Africa remains vacant and will be filled up until the realization of the next General Council in the following months.
Being fully aware of our duties, we clarify that we will continue the fight to strengthen the anti-imperialist struggle of WFDY for lasting peace, freedom, social progress and democracy worldwide.
