Announcement of EDON’s Press Office for the anniversary of Cyprus’ independence
The declaration of the independence of Cyprus on the summer of 1960 following the Zurich-London agreements was not the result that the people of Cyprus were hoping for since it was considered from the beginning as a given independence that was posing a threat. Even so, our people once again would have to rise to the occasion and build a new future for our troubled island.
The collaboration between the two communities Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots was the most important factor to be used for the discharge of the negative points of the truncated independence. The support of the newly established Cyprus Democracy and the peace between the two communities, far away from chauvinism and nationalism would have been the key factor to prevent the guarantors from intervening. However, at the same time imperialism with NATO as the leader had never stopped targeting the island and began designing the division and catalysis of the Cyprus Democracy and also the overthrow of president Makarios himself.
The actions of many within and outside the Cyprus Democracy, led the way for the democracy’s catalyzing and for overthrowing the elected president Makarios. The ‘twin crime’ of 1974 was consciously designed and executed by those submissive to NATO, the Greek Junta, Grivas and EOKA B. The coup on the 15th of July was used to prepare for the Turkish invasion and as a result 5 days later on the 20th of July, our island to be divided and our people to suffer the tragic consequences that we are currently living today.
EDON for many years now continues to fight for freedom and the reunification of Cyprus so that we can build a safe future for all the Cypriots (Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins). We fight for a solution within the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the high level agreements, and which will be aligned with the national and European law; a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution with political equality between the two communities as established by the UN Security Council’s resolutions; a solution which will restore the unity, territorial integrity, national identity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus; a solution which will restore and ensure the human rights and basic freedoms of all the Cypriots.
We also remind that we can no longer accept the nationalistic and chauvinistic exacerbations that divide our people and reject any solution but also that we are not seeking a place next to NATO, like the government of Anastasiades is repeatedly declaring, and accepting any solution. We do not forget that NATO was the key player in the Cyprus tragedy and is continuing to shed blood to the people using its imperialistic plans in the wider area.
For this reason, as EDON we call again for the Cypriot youth even if they are struggling with the consequences of the capitalistic crisis, to attend united with us in the fight for freedom and reunification. It is a difficult and painful fight which we can win though as a youth so that we can build an island which will finally achieve to taste true independence; from the people for the people.
